Rendon Slides To Nationals At Sixth

Dec 18, 2014 3:48 AM

Rice slugger Anthony Rendon, believed to be a potential first overall pick, slid to the Nationals with the sixth overall pick on Monday night. "That big? I went sixth overall," Rendon said with a chuckle. "It didn't matter to me if I went one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 13th or 30th. It didn't matter to me. "I feel awesome. I came to Rice and it's been a great experience. That was my main goal, to improve my Draft stock. Anything before the 27th round -- that's when I was drafted after high school -- that's a plus for me. So I'm happy." The Nationals already have a third baseman for years to come in Ryan Zimmerman, so there is a strong possibility that Rendon could be switched to second or first base. "Right now, we feel that third base is his position," general manager Mike Rizzo said of Rendon. "We evaluate him as a Gold Glove-caliber defensive guy at third base. We are going to delay that decision [as far as making a position switch]. We'll make that decision down the road. "I think he is a terrifically polished college player. I think he will be a quick-to-the-big-leagues type of guy, as far as the normal course of a drafted player. But we are not going to put any stipulations or timetables like that. We really feel good about this player. This is a guy that we had at the top of our draft board for a long time."

The first four players drafted on Monday night in the first round of baseball's First-Year Player Draft were all pitchers for the first time in history. Of the first 20 picks, 12 were pitchers. Nineteen pitchers -- 13 right-handers and six left-handers -- went in the first round, a total one shy of the record set in 1999 and equaled in 2001.

Pirates: No. 1 Pick Will 'Come Down To 2 Minutes Before The Draft'

Oct 6, 2014 6:03 PM

Unlike the last two years, there isn't a clear-cut No. 1 draft pick in this week's MLB First-Year Player Draft. The Pirates own the first overall pick and they aren't divulging anything heading into the first round on Monday night. "Publicly," Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington said, "it'll absolutely come down to 2 minutes before the draft." While Stephen Strasburg (2009) and Bryce Harper (2010) were hyped as probable No. 1 picks for months, several players have taken turns at the top of mock drafts this year. "I would rate this draft as without an elite No. 1, I would say it's safe to assume," Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said, "but it's probably as deep a draft with power arms and impact-type players as I've been around the last five or six drafts."

Mariners Could Pick Rendon With No. 2 Pick

Oct 9, 2014 9:36 AM

The Mariners, who hold the second overall pick in this week's MLB Draft, could select Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon. His Rice Owls are in the NCAA regionals this weekend. Rendon began the season as the consensus No. 1 draft pick before injuries and diminished numbers clouded his status. "I'm pretty anxious," Rendon said. "I want the process to be over with so I can go on with my personal career. It's been pretty bad lately, with everyone asking where they think I'll go. There's a lot of anxiety."
